Cellulite is a tethering problem, not a fat problem. Fibrous bands anchor the skin to deeper tissue and pull it inward at fixed points. Losing fat does not release them, and in some patients it makes the dimpling more visible rather than less.
The anatomy: fibrous septa, not fat, create the dimple
Beneath the skin, fibrous septa (connective-tissue bands) run from the dermis down to underlying fascia, dividing subcutaneous fat into compartments. In most women these septa run predominantly vertically, perpendicular to the skin surface, allowing fat lobules to press upward between them while the septa hold the skin down at fixed points. In most men the septa are arranged in a crisscross pattern that distributes tension differently, which is a large part of why cellulite is far more common in women. It is anatomy, not fitness or discipline.
A dimple is a tether — shrinking fat doesn't release it
A dimple is therefore a tether. The fat lobule is the visible bulge, but the depression is a fixed anchor. Reducing the lobule shrinks the bulge without releasing the anchor, and thinning the overlying tissue can leave the remaining tether more conspicuous. This is why lean, athletic women still have visible dimpling, and why it is present in a majority of adult women regardless of body composition. The pattern typically appears after puberty, which points to the role of sex hormones in connective tissue architecture and fat distribution. It tends to become more noticeable with age for a second reason: the dermis thins and loses elasticity over time, so the same tethering telegraphs more visibly through a thinner, less resilient surface.
Retiring the myths — and what a treatment actually has to do
It is also worth retiring a persistent myth. Cellulite is not caused by toxins, poor circulation or lymphatic stagnation, and no amount of dry brushing, massage or wrapping addresses a fibrous band. Those approaches produce brief swelling that temporarily masks the surface. Whatever the mechanism, if a treatment does not reach and release the septa, it cannot change the structure creating the dimple. That is also why tethered dimpling and skin laxity need to be told apart before anything is booked.
