Male pattern hair loss is driven by DHT, a byproduct of testosterone that shrinks genetically sensitive follicles on the crown and hairline until they stop producing visible hair. It is progressive, and follicles that have been fully dormant for years may not come back. That is why the medication conversation is worth having early.
Finasteride blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, substantially lowering scalp DHT. Clinical studies have shown it slows or halts further loss for most men who take it consistently, with regrowth in many. It is a once-daily tablet, or a topical solution for men who prefer to limit systemic exposure.
Minoxidil works differently: it widens blood vessels in the scalp and prolongs the growth phase of the follicle, so thinning hair grows thicker and longer. It is available as the familiar topical foam or as a low-dose oral tablet, which many men find easier to stay consistent with.
Used together, the two address both sides of the problem — one slows the damage, the other encourages regrowth. For men who want more, our PRP Hair Revival treatment adds concentrated growth factors directly into the scalp, and combining approaches often does more than any one alone.
At LovMedSpa, hair loss medication is prescribed by our Medical Directors after an evaluation of your pattern, history, and goals — and the plan is revisited at follow-up, since results take months to read.
Finasteride lowers scalp DHT and slows or halts further loss for most men who take it consistently.
Minoxidil extends the growth phase so thinning hair can grow back thicker, especially on the crown.
Both medications come in oral and topical forms. Your provider matches the form to your tolerance and routine.
Combining finasteride and minoxidil generally does more than either alone, and adding PRP may improve results further.
Shedding may briefly increase in the first weeks; visible improvement takes three to six months. We tell you that up front.
